Western Yellowjacket - Vespula pensylvanica - female

Western Yellowjacket - Vespula pensylvanica - Female
Puyallup, Pierce County, Washington, USA
October 14, 2007
I only have this angle, so I'm not sure if this is Western or not.

Thanks Richard. This is my second Western Y. one in MT and now one in WA and both are chewing on "wood".

A true born Western (Vespula pennsylvanica)
Yellow ring around left compound eye is visible even from this angle. A large-sized worker with some features of a queen, e.g. relatively broad black spots on urosternites. Such "intercaste" individuals can be found late in the season, in nearly all yellowjacket species with the possible exception of V. squamosa..
