What Fly?

What Fly?
Fairport, Monroe County, New York, USA
October 12, 2007
Size: 8 mm
I often see this type and similar species perched in the center of broad types of leaves awaiting something or another. Anyone know the species?

A guess: Dolichopodidae
Most long-legged flys are metallic and look different than this, but there are others similar to yours. Was it up and down on the leaves a lot? (Doing so would be another indicator.)

As I said, I see these flies
As I said, I see these flies often. They are usually perched in the center of a leaf and don't move around much, apparently waiting for something. They stick out like a sore thumb, so I'm wondering why this strategy.
