Size: ~5mm.
Another fly from our potato plants which are near the compost bin, last evening was a good evening for flies, saw several different flies on the potato plants. First time I've looked for flies so close to sunset, they were less likely to fly away but often crawled down into the vegetation where I couldn't get a good photo of them. This photo was taken about 17:30 (live oak/chaparral habitat).

Fungus gnat.
The long spines at the tip of each tibial segment help ID thes flies easily (family Mycetophilidae). Nice shots.
