Hera Buckmoth - Hemileuca hera

Hera Buckmoth - Hemileuca hera
Fort Rock State Natural Area, Lake County, Oregon, USA
August 26, 2007
Size: 2 1/2 inches long
This huge, showy beauty was in the desolate scrub desert of Eastern Oregon. Very quiet, fairly exposed on a dry shrub, hanging on in a rather strong wind, in the middle of the day.

Fort Rock rocks!
I was just thinking about Ft. Rock the other day! I remember as a child collecting bluewing grasshoppers and huge blister beetles there. Talk about the middle of nowhere! You should post a scenic image of the site, it will knock people out:-)

I agree completely
Fort Rock is a very cool spot. I had never been there before and really enjoyed it. I will put on a picture of it, since you requested it!

The moth kinda does that

Hemileuca hera
Look at this and see what you think, it's definitely in Hemileuca, it's a Giant Silkworm Moth, and a absolute beauty at that!! Great find!

Definately the Hera Buckmoth
I looked around on the internet and found several pictures of H. hera that are a very close match to mine, in terms of pattern and color, in its light phase.

It does live there

This is definitely Hemileuca hera, it lives in Oregon and is the only Hemileuca species that is similar. Great pic once again!
