Mating robberflies? - male - female

Mating robberflies? - Male Female
Athens/ Ben Burton Park, Clarke County, Georgia, USA
October 16, 2007
Size: about 1 in.
Well, I'm completely stumped. I initially thought this was a mating pair of insects, but on closer inspection the smaller individual didn't quite look alive. I guess this could be a case of sexual dimorphism. Still, what are they? I see no antenna and the legs are damdelfly-like, but the body is shaped more like a cranefly. Any ideas?

Re: We would suggest mating Robberflies
Wow! I think you're on to something. A more specific ID is probably unlikely. Unfortunately, I was only able to snap the one picture and it isn't the greatest.

Don't sell Herschel short!
He does magic with Robberfly ID.
