Unidentified Machaerocera species - Machaerocera mexicana - female

Unidentified Machaerocera species - Machaerocera mexicana - Female
Cienega Creek, Pima County, Arizona, USA
October 16, 2007
Size: Medium-large
I submitted an image of this species last month and it was thought to be a first U.S. record of Machaerocera mexicana. I submitted the image to an expert at the University of Arizona, who went out to Cienega Creek and discovered a healthy population. He collected a few individuals and determined that they are of the Machaerocera genus, but probably not Mexicana. He is not sure which species they belong to and is doing further research. I'll update the results here. Meanwhile, I went out this morning and obtained some more detailed images.

M. mexicana
There is currently only one species recognized in the genus, and this fits well within it's limits as currently defined.

Moved from Machaerocera.

Great stuff!
Hi Phil, This is great. Not only a national record, but perhaps a new species! My gut reaction though, is that it probably is just good ol' M. mexicana. I was thinking about running over there to have a look and verify it, now it's official, and I don't have to (but I likely will anyway - next year).

Discovery
is what keeps me glued to this work :-)
