beetle with a snout - Rhinosimus viridiaeneus

beetle with a snout - Rhinosimus viridiaeneus
Harvard, Worcester County, Massachusetts, USA
April 20, 2005
Size: 3/8"
This beetle has small blue spots on it's back, and the snout looks elongated, but it's not a weevil.

Another name
These are sometimes called "False weevils" for obvious reasons.

Rhinosimus sp.
Tom-

This appears to be the first representative of the beetle family Salpingidae for this site. I believe it to be a representative of the genus Rhinosimus, of which there are 3 widespread North American species. We only have a series of one of them here, so I can't eyeball a species determination for it. Quite a rare critter, actually!

cheers,

zack

Rhinosimus sp.
Thanks for the ID Zack. I only took 1 picture of this beetle, because there were a few other bugs under the bark I found this under, and with a quick look, I didn't notice this one was odd till I looked at the picture on the computer.

Rhinosimus viridiaeneus
Zach is correct, it is Rhinosimus, with Rhinosimus viridiaeneus being the only species in this area. Not really rare, but only frequent in the correct habitat.

identified to species
Thanks Don, for getting this one fully identified.
