Here's a closer shot for possible ID of host mushroom. A similar dense patch arose in the same location last year. I suspect there is a buried log or stump feeding the mycelium.

Reminds me of Armillaria
but fungi are not easy to ID.

You will need a picture of the gill pattern on the underside of the "caps" for a better idea.
