Mischievous or Carolina? - Schistocerca damnifica - Female
New Bern, Craven County, North Carolina, USA
October 21, 2007
I can't determine a correct ID. If it helps, it was eating a rose petal.

Moved from Bird Grasshoppers.

Schistocerca damnifica
it is.

I would say [i]Schistocerca d
I would say Schistocerca damnifica as it lacks the requisite notch in the pronotum of Dissosteira carolina. However, I'm not entirely sure that this is the Mischivious Bird Grasshopper; I am entirely sure it is not a Carolina Grasshopper. Which bird grasshopper it is could be the subject of debate - they are so difficult to tell apart. Either way, your photo is very good. Rather unique, pale, coloration, which sometimes suggests the grasshopper recently completed its final molt. If that's the case, the coloration should darken over a period of time.
