Yellow

Yellow "Eyes" - Papilio rutulus
Santa Cruz County, California, USA
Size: 2-3 inches
The photo shows a redish tint, though I remember seeing more of a translucent dark gray color in natural daylight. We found it crawling across the pavement in the middle of the day, about 3 miles from the ocean and 2 miles away from where the redwood forest begins.

Western Tiger
See Western Tiger Swallowtail, Papilio rutulus -- looks to be a match.

Western Tiger Swallowtail...
One of the most amusing caterpillars, in my opinion. When frightened, they pull their heads in and arch up slightly, looking like a snake. They even might push out two brightly colored scent 'tentacles' to ward off predators.

My friends and I found a cati
