I want to kiss you, but your lips are venomous poison (from the Alice Cooper song "Poison") - Argiope aurantia - Female

I noticed that the female garden spider living under the dish antenna had something big in the web and went to check out what she had. She had captured a 3/4 grown Anole lizard and had done the "alien" thing to it. I'd heard that some of the larger spiders could take lizards and small mammals, but never seen it before. While trying to get into a position to take a picture without disturbing her, I saw the small spider crawling around/over the corpse, even getting between big momma and the lizard. She finally settled down on the lips, I guess she found some soft tissue near the mouth, and started feeding. By the next afternoon, the lizard was completely dry and shriveled.

The little spider looked like a reddish/black marble. It's not a black widow, I have them too, but I've never seen this type of behavior. What is she?

John,
I've resubmitted your image here cropped as well. I moved this one to Argiope and the other to Argyrodes.

Cool
Almost certainly an Argyrodes commensal spider in the web with the big Argiope. This (the Argiope) is the big species that can take mice and hummingbirds. A friend has some large ones that enjoy catching Green Tree Frogs, which are no easy feat. The Argiopes make their webs near the lighted windows and the insects that come to the lights bring everything else. This is the first I have seen take a fair sized lizard.

Wow,
this is an amazing shot. At first glance your small spider looks a lot like one I shot in NC. See this one .

I hope you don't mind John, but your photo is so interesting I cropped and lightened it and posted it again. See .

Do you have a date for this shot?

update
No problem Lynette, I was just trying to get it small enough to get it on the site and didn't know if anyone would even look twice at it.
Photo was taken 10/1/2007 17:00:59. The day was very cloudy and it took several tries to get close and get everything in focus.

There are several more of these two, but most would end up in the Frass. I'm still having teething problems with this camera (Rebel XTI). I even have a picture of a big female garden spider and her vastly smaller male suitor that I took in August or September if anyone is interested.

Yes,
please post it. If you have photoshop, I find it easiest to crop my images at 5.6" by 5.6" at 100 resolution. If you don't have an editing program, I'd be glad to help on the next image as well. Orb weavers are usually a dime a dozen, but this image you've posted is truely amazing! I'm looking forward to seeing your other one.
