Unknown Fly - Austin, Texas - Palpada vinetorum

Unknown Fly - Austin, Texas - Palpada vinetorum
Austin, Hays County, Texas, USA
October 31, 2007
Size: approx. 3/4"
This is probably not the best angle for identifying this bee, but I am hoping something may be definitive. I was taking photos of various species of insects on the flowers in our backyard in the late afternoon.

Moved
Moved from Palpada.

Only two wings - this is diptera!
It looks to be one of the syrphid flies. One of the dipterists here will likely be able to tell you which one.

Welcome to Bug Guide (a little late)
Nice shot of what is indeed a syrphid. While I'm no expert, I'm pretty confident this is Palpada, one of the more nicely colored syrphids, which are also called hover flies and flower flies.

Actually, that is a good camera angle for both flies and bees. Views from the side and face are also good. Detail of wing veins is also important in most cases. But hey, the subjects aren't always cooperative!

Thanks for the information
I appreciate the information. Glad I found this site. So many people with so much information. Thanks again.

Doug

You're welcome.
This is a fine site and we hope to see more of your photos. Thank you for posting!

Palpada vinetorum
I have been looking at various species of Palpada and have found a photo of one species that looks close. However, having a biological background I would not propose that this is the exact species; however, the photo was from south Texas.

I think you're safe to genus.
I haven't been able to get on IDed to species, but maybe you'll luck out. (My best guess is that you're right and that my post was also P. vinetorum.) Love those syrphids!
