Crane Fly - Tipula ultima

Crane Fly - Tipula ultima
Sand Springs, Osage County, Oklahoma, USA
November 1, 2007
Size: over 2 1/2" (body only)
Crane fly. Please help with ID.
Ok. In the past I've said "that has to be the biggest Crane Fly I've ever seen". But, this one is truly gigantic and it definitely is the biggest Crane Fly I've ever seen. The body alone was over 2 1/2 inches, maybe three, then the legs just went on forever. It's monstrous. It was sitting on the woody limb of a honeysuckle or else it probably wouldn't have supported it. HUGE I tell ya....massive....eyes as big as dinner plates....the mother of all Crane Flies....in fact I don't think it was a Crane Fly at all, I think it was a prehistoric Pterodactyl (as opposed to a modern day Pterodactyl).

Did I mention it was big....
