Male Aphonopelma iodius - Aphonopelma iodius - Male
Mt. Hamilton, CA, Santa Clara County, California, USA
November 3, 2007
I'd wanted to photograph the tarantulas native to this area for years. I finally saw one at an opportune time and carefully captured it. It was crossing the road -- presumably in search of a mate (my first clue that it's probably a male). Photos were taken in a lightbox but it is a wild specimen. I'll return him to where I found him for release shortly.

Wonderful!
Nice images of a handsome spider:-) May I ask how you came by the species identification? I only ask because I know how difficult it is to identify tarantulas to species.

Well, based on the informatio
Well, based on the information here -- and I could so be wrong. Looking through the various threads under Aphonopelma, it seemed that the only tarantulas this far north and in the SF bay area would be this one... it looked just like the only other picture under this species (one of the long term contributers had identified it) and not quite like ones under the other species... and there was a note that the triangle shape around the eyes was distinct to this species. But, totally could be wrong... and I fully expect to be corrected if so. :-}

If any additional pictures would help to be sure of the ID, I have more pics and I also haven't released him yet.

Yeah... I think he's a particularly handsome critter. He's doing wonders with helping me get over my phobia of spiders. No. Seriously.
