Gary A: They (specimens 970 and 975) are both the same genus (Ceranemota - aka Lutestrings) and are fall fliers, and all are western only in distribution. They are quite variable and difficult to identify to species - and I cannot offer more that. I don't even know if yours (again #970 and #975) represent one or two species!

Not a noctuid
I think that is not a noctuid. Looks for me like a moths of the family Thyatiridae; may be from the genus Ceranemota (6442-6249).

Yes .. and several species of Ceranemota live around the region. So looking at members of this genus from Calif to Canada, Ceranemota fasciata seems a very good match - right down to the basal spot. C. tearlei is also close. I will leave as tenative but the genus looks to be a good fit. Your comments appreciated and further help always welcome. I'm learning I think.
