As far as you know, are there any very similar Melissodes in this area (Claremont, CA)? I should really take a look at what they've got at the L.A. County Mus. of Natural History.
Until certain, probably better to keep it at genus level?

 
I now think these are Melissodes communis alopex
see comments on other images about miscuration of my reference specimens from Pasadena and consequent misdet. of several images
