Hydroscapha sp. Habitat - Hydroscapha natans

Hydroscapha sp. Habitat - Hydroscapha natans
Idaho County, Idaho, USA
October 27, 2007
Size: 1mm
Hydroscapha habitat in a hot springs in northern Idaho. This represents a new northernmost locality for Hydroscapha in the Western Hemisphere, if not the world (we are still trying to figure that one out) and my first experience with living myxophagans. They were really quite abundant, and one could have easily glanced over them if one did not know that they were there. The hydroscaphids (both larvae and adults) graze on the mats of algae on the vertical faces of the springs.
