Black Scavenger Fly - Sepsis

Black Scavenger Fly - Sepsis
Springfield, Fairfax County, Virginia, USA
April 23, 2005
Size: ~4mm
This small fly was originially on an azalea leaf, but it was extremely skittish and would not stay still long enough for an extreme closeup shot. I chased it for a while until it finally landed on a plastic container long enough for a clear photo. The abdomen was actually a metallic red/purple color, though it's hard to tell from the image because I used flash.

Sepsis
This small fly belongs to the genus Sepsis of the family Sepsidae.
