Ambush Bugs With Prey - Phymata - male - female

Ambush Bugs With Prey - Phymata - Male Female
Elysburg, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania, USA
August 12, 2007
I'm always surprised at the size of prey these little denizens are capable of taking. I think this is a Downy Yellowjacket.

The prey is...
a male of the Common Aerial Yellowjacket (Dolichovespula arenaria). Phymata bugs among those predators whose modest size doesn't predict the dangerousness. They are usually perceived too late by nectaring insects.

Thanks
for the correct ID on the yellowjacket, Richard.
