Wierd cocoon like things on vinyl siding - Apterona helix

Wierd cocoon like things on vinyl siding - Apterona helix
Oakland County, Michigan, USA
Size: anout 1/4 inchin diameter
Just moved into a house in a more rural area - found these odd cocoon like things on the siding & now in the attic as well. They appear to have skins of some kind of larvae, surrounded by a greyish sandy material. There appear to be no live larvae in any I looked at, and they are stuck like glue on the walls. There is also no infestation of any kind of bugs that I can see. Any ideas???

Yes.
These are cases of the "snailcase bagworm," Apterona helix, also known as the "garden bagworm." They are in the moth family Psychidae, and were introduced here from Europe sometime in the 1940s. Please see the online Penn State U fact sheet on this species for more information
