Firefly Larva - Pyractomena borealis

Firefly Larva - Pyractomena borealis
Hampshire County, Massachusetts, USA
April 25, 2005
Size: ~13 mm
I've shot these larva in my yard before, which Troy had suggested was a Firefly larva. I found one today crawling around on our basement wall...perhaps looking for a place to pupate. I brought it up on the deck for a quick photo shoot before I sent it back on its merry way. Here's a lateral view.

firefly indeed -- pls move there

light producing organ
Robin suggested here that the light producing organ might be obvious in the larva too. It certainly doesn't look obvious here to us. Does that mean we've finally answered the question and these are Lycidae?

Not obvious; agreed
This one looks similar to my photo, and as far as light-producing organs go, it doesn't come close to matching the one in a luminescent adult. I guess the jury's still out on this one but I'm sure we'll get an answer sooner or later.

Net-wingers...
Hey all,

I've seen net-winged beetles here too, so it is definitely a possibility...should we move all these shots there until we hear otherwise?

I'd prefer...
leaving them in the Coleoptera section until we find out what they are. I see you've already moved them to Lycidae but I'm not sure they're that, and it seems that nobody else is sure yet either.
