Size: 4 inches
At the time I thought this was a tarantula, but have been told it is not.
All help appreciated. I have other pictures, including a closeup of head, if that would help.

Thanks Jeff. There is another picture of it on flickr (where I call it a tarantula .. I will correct that), but I didn't know a wolf spider could get so big .. it was at least as large as the palm of my hand. Do these Carolina wolf spiders exist in south central Texas? Here is the link to the flickr picture, which shows a closeup from the front showing head, eyes etc. in case that clinches your ID.

It is a safe bet that it is a wolf spider
in the Lycosidae. The females in that family carry their young on their backs
