Soldier Fly on Black-Eyed Susan - Hedriodiscus binotatus - male

Soldier Fly on Black-Eyed Susan - Hedriodiscus binotatus - Male
Near Ruraldale, Upshur County, West Virginia, USA
July 14, 1991
Another view of the Soldier Fly on Black-Eyed Susan. Genus?

Hedriodiscus binotatus (Loew)
This seems is Hedriodiscus binotatus (Loew). However, the species is not known from the Mid-Atlantic states, so I am wondering if the image was taken in the western U.S.

No, not western
No, this was definitely taken here in West Virginia, only a hundred paces from my door, in fact, in a large meadow of Black-Eyed Susan.

Date 7/14/1991, Upshur County, WV, on Kodachrome 64.

I'll keep an eye out for these this year.

Two sexes?
Are you sure that these two are the same specimen? This one looks like a male and the other a female.

Not sure, no!
Given the 1991 photo date, no I'm not sure of much! But you're right about the two genders, so I am "unlinking" the two pictures.
