Robber Fly and prey - Lestomyia

Robber Fly and prey - Lestomyia
Catalina State Park, Tucson, Pima County, Arizona, USA
April 2, 2005
Any one know if this robber fly is specific to the Arizona desert area around Tucson?

Lestomyia
This is a female of Lestomyia eating a Syrphid.

AZ robbers
AZ and NM have a massive robber list. The closer you get to California (which is robber fly central) the longer the list gets. And a large part of the AZ list is made up of Efferia species. Many of the SW species are limited only to that area. This is not an Efferia due to the antennae shape. Unfortunately I can take you no farther at this time. Eric Fisher might make a highly educated guess.
