This is Pogonomyrmex califor
This is Pogonomyrmex californicus, almost certainly one of the most common species in the genus.

Oddly, we don't have a page for it.
We have many IDed to genus however. Gordon, are these tough to get to species?

Ants can be very tough to get
Ants can be very tough to get to species, Pogos no more so than others, Even with good photographs members of this particular species group can be very challenging at times. A lot of the ability to Identify Pogonomyrmex to species depends on the ability to see features not readily apparent or visible with just a camera.

Good info; thanks, Gordon.
Often, I think I expect too much and appreciate knowing what's possible and what isn't.
