Sorry for the lack of focus. This guy was in a lot of brush, mainly wild raspberries, moving, and I didn't get a clear shot. But it was very bright, and looks pretty distinctive.

Thanks to all of you.
If I remember correctly, there are plenty of nightshade and/or nettle type plants in that area. I'm just surprised that these were the first that I have ever seen. They are hard to miss.

a Colorado Potato Beetle - Leptinotarsa decimlineata.

Guide Page for Leptinotarsa juncta
The guide page for Leptinotarsa juncta mentions "Also, a brown stripe at the center of each elytron (wing cover) and on the inner edge of each elytron (where they meet down the middle) distinguish this species."
