Lasius? - Acanthomyops - female

Lasius? - Acanthomyops - Female
Plum Island, Essex County, Massachusetts, USA
November 25, 2007
Found under a log on the beach.

Citronella Ant
She wasn't up far enough from the sea if another storm comes in. I guess that soft beach sand is tempting for them to burrow into.

At a broad sense, yes
because Acanthomyops is now classified as a mere subgenus of Laisus. This dealated female was to overwinter in a rather hazardous location, unless the log was far enough from sea.
