Funnel or sheetweb weaver??? - Agelenopsis

Funnel or sheetweb weaver??? - Agelenopsis
Erie, Erie County, Pennsylvania, USA
November 7, 2007
I would like some help figuring out if this is a funnel weaver or sheetweb weaver. Also, is this a female because of the two little thingys on the back end? Thanks, Genevive

I believe those are the prominent spinnerets
which are characteristic of Agelenopsis (compare below). Wait for a second opinion on that ID, though, as I'm no spider expert.

Is is male/female
This spider was crawling on my wall in my back hall, in the beginning of Nov. Do they hibernate? What happens to spiders in the winter?

Female.
Female most likely, but you can't tell until the last molt into adulthood (so this could be an immature male). Yes, spiders can hibernate, but some stay active, too, even during the colder months.

How can you tell
How can you tell if they're youngsters? I've never watched a spider grow into adulthood.
