As Jeff already said, she is probably guarding her eggsac. If you look around in this area, you may find more females guarding eggsacs. We would love to see more of these P. texanus females. I'd like to see if there is any variation between the females in that area.

 
Another Phidippus texanus?
I have posted another photo of a similar Phidippus sp. that was taken last summer at the same conservation easement -- http://bugguide.net/node/view/159949. The distance between the two spider locations is 1.84 miles. I will try to get more photos of this species but it will be a year before I return to this easement.
