Beetle Larva
Near Ruraldale, Upshur County, West Virginia, USA
April 12, 2005
Found under bark. With that head, I'm thinking Buprestid or Cerambycid. Help with ID appreciated.
Had an unusual method of locomtion: it moved by having waves of "skin" move down the body.

Buprestid
The large flattened 'head' is diagnostic - the Buprestids are sometimes refered to as "Flat headed wood borers" - examples of both Cerambycid and Buprestid larva can be found

Thanks, Phillip. I think I was being misled by some of the Cerambycid species that also have large-headed larva—for example, Callidium violaceum on the page you referred me to. But it looks like the key to focus on is
flat-headed
larvae, whose heads are large as well as flat.
I will move this to the Buprestid pages.

This is not Buprestidae. Rather, it is Cerambycidae.
