This is the pupa of a large moth
if cold weather has started in Alabama, it may be in a winter resting state and not due to emerge till spring. It reminds me of an Imperial Moth pupa I once had (below), so I think it could be something in the family Saturniidae, which includes some beautiful large moths. Click on my image to see what happened to mine, and a discussion which may be helpful.

Eacles imperialis
I would probably agree with an Imperial moth pupa. There are two other large Saturniids that pupate like that in your area. Except those two don't have a long cremaster (pointed end of the pupa)like this one. An Imperial moth however, does have an elongated cremaster. That pupa is most likely a winter diapause one. Imperials fly only till September in your area, so I think it wont hatch untill April-September next year. Do you have any idea of what species of tree it was found near?

Compare to a picture of my Citheronia regalis pupae (another large saturniid) notice the barely visible cremaster on the C. regalis as oppose to your image which has a long one. http://bugguide.net/node/view/157596
