Fiery Hunter Beetle - Calosoma calidum

Fiery Hunter Beetle - Calosoma calidum
Town of Baileys Harbor, Hidden Corners Sanctuary, Door County, Wisconsin, USA
May 31, 1997
Size: 1-1/4 in. long
Adult crawling on the driveway during the day. ID by Peter Messer, Mequon, WI.

"Calosoma calidum"
Janice, Thanks for reminding me to add this new county record to the WI carabid database. Although blurry here, the dilated front tarsi are characteristic of male ground beetles. "Calo + soma" = "beautiful + body" is a well-chosen name for the genus ...but a band of taxonomists recently surprised the World by renaming this critter Callisthenes calidus. "Calli + sthenes" = "beautiful + strength" works for me.

Beetles
What a pleasant surprise to see your name in the COMMENTS. I have posted several of the beetles that you IDed for me. I hope all is going well with you. Thanks for all your help, Peter. Are you saying that the scientific name has been changed for this beetle?

New name Callisthenes calidus
is now accepted by several carabid authorities on both sides of the Atlantic. Recognition of a generic revision usually takes years to trickle down to the general entomology level.
