Lubber Monster - Dracotettix monstrosus - female

Lubber Monster - Dracotettix monstrosus - Female
Santa Monica Mountains, Los Angeles County, California, USA
May 1, 2001
Size: 5 inches
Dragging itself into shrubs along the trailside. Late afternoon. Sorry for picture quality, I was just learning the camera that year (2001).

This is the species D. monstrosus
Females are much larger than males. The other California species (D. plutonius) has the part in front of the eyes shorter, and the median ridge of the pronutum lower on the back half. Also, it is found in mountains in the Mojave, east of the Sierras.

Got'a wonder though - 5 inches - really? Given the very pregnant state of this one, 2.5 inches or even a bit more might be possible (maybe it was 5 cm?). :-)

Moved from Dragon Lubbers.

Dragon lubber?
Maybe that should be "draggin' lubber" to match your description:-) Anyway, please see the existing one or two images of a dragon lubber in the guide pages. Neat find!

Yes
Jeff Cole confirmed this is a Dragon Lubber
