Is this an insect gall?

Is this an insect gall?
Baton Rouge - BREC Bluebonnet Swamp Nature Center, East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana, USA
December 3, 2007
Size: about 5/8 inch
Found today in leaf litter on the trail.
Lots of oak leaves, but also other leaves.
Not attached to a leaf or twig.
Inside texture like an apple, quite hard and moist.

I have found these before, but never cut one open.
Always on the ground.
Never attached to a part of the tree.

Was it going to over-winter on the ground?
Will it still survive once it is detached from a tree?
I have another that I did not open.
Would it survive and hatch if I kept it in a bottle?

December seems like a funny time of the year for it to be so young.

Moved from Gall Wasps.

Looks like an Oak Gall,
of a gall wasp, Cynipidae. The oak species might lead to more information.
