Soft Scale

Soft Scale
Lacey (near Olympia), Thurston County, Washington, USA
November 10, 2007
I know it's not an insect. It's not a slug (I'm pretty sure), but what is it? Any ideas?

Scales (Coccoidea)?
How about Scales (Coccoidea)

I love this place
Thanks, John!! I knew this was the right place to ask even though this wasn't an insect (well, actually, it turns out I'm even more ignorant than I thought and it IS an insect!)

Are scales specific to the species of plants they parasitize? If I'd peeled it off the stem, would I have seen the insect(s) underneath?

Whitefly or psyllid nymph?
Just to caution that there are some psyllid and whitefly nymphs (and pseudopupae) that strongly resemble scale insects.

Information page
I just added a few links to the Scale insects information pages. You should be able to find out a little more there.

Not an expert
I know very little, I went to Wikipedia to read about them after I posted. Maybe someone else will comment?
