What a great picture! How did
What a great picture! How did you get it stand still for the picture? That white collar behind the head has me stumped!

 
I should really go through
the rest of my pictures of this fly, to see what other surprises there might be. Just a lucky shot (used 'aperture priority' on this one (f16.0;1/200) Should look for this collar feature on the specimen.

It may be a dense patch of white hairs, but it looks too solid and well defined.

 
I looked at my specimens of E
I looked at my specimens of E. sierraensis and yes they do have the white tissue at the "pronotal collar". I think that when the specimens dry the "neck" shrinks, pulling the head in closer to the thorax. Also the fly has to be looking down to expose that area to view.

 
I have only one other image where this
shows, then disappears due to the change in perspective. More specimen from this and other areas should help to clear this up.
