Argiope - Argiope trifasciata

Argiope - Argiope trifasciata
Oakland, Alameda County, California, USA
December 8, 2007
Size: Body=5/8"
Which argiope? The back of this spider appeared completely white; we did not see the underside. Found at 900 ft. elev. in Claremont Canyon, at about 10 am on cold (42 deg.F), windy morning, on a pile of wood chips. Yes, those are fingertips at the top of the picture.

I'm no expert but....
check the guide under the banded or silver garden spider or Arigope trifasciata...this is really late into the year to find one ...I know we have had a mild winter in the Bay area up to a week ago but even so most of the the garden spiders have met their demise by now.

Argiope
I had pretty much determined that this was either banded or silver, but since it didn't look to me quite like any of the pictures, and because I really don't know anything about spiders, including that they disappear in the winter, I thought I'd better ask ...

An
old female banded Argiope that is most likely going to die soon.
