I remember originally thinking this might be Ranatra, but I wasn't sure. I'll recheck since I don't think I had Arnett (1) last time I looked and update things accordingly.

 
Definitely Ranatra
Only two of the three nearctic genera are found in the eastern US. The other genus (Nepa) only has one member with an oval body shape. I updated the Nepidae guide page with my research.
