Orb Weaver - Araneus saevus - female

Orb Weaver - Araneus saevus - Female
Johnston Canyon, Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada
August 23, 2007
Size: 2 cm at least
Alberta data point. The white dash on the front of the abdomen looks right for this species.
My mom found this lumbering orb weaver along the trail. She's not too fond of insects let alone spiders, so I don't know how she wasn't too scared or how she even saw it in the first place! I would have walked right by it myself. After shooting it, I moved the spider to tall vegetation away from the trail, out of harm's way.
