Goldenrod Gall Fly - Eurosta solidaginis - female

Goldenrod Gall Fly - Eurosta solidaginis - Female
American Tobacco Trail south of Scott King Road, in power line cut, Durham County, North Carolina, USA
April 30, 2005
Size: 9 mm
Females are slightly larger than males and have a prominent ovipositor. I collected galls over the winter and then kept them in controlled outdoor conditions in order to observe the flies. This is the only female I've had emerge so far from my collection of approximately 20 galls. Roughly six males have emerged to this one female.

Update: One more female emerged circa May 3 and two more on May 6. No more males emerged that week.
