Gonatopus mimoides - Pseudogonatopus mimoides - female

Gonatopus mimoides - Pseudogonatopus mimoides - Female
Lake Kaweah, Tulare County, California, USA
September 21, 1994
Size: 3.5 mm.
On the left you have the enlarged tarsal claw. The toothy structure on the right is actually the fifth tarsal segment, with a lateral extension that matches up against the enlarged claw when the two hinge closed. It connects to the fourth tarsal segment near the hinge. Weird stuff!
