Bark Louse - Valenzuela

Bark Louse - Valenzuela
Sand Springs, Osage County, Oklahoma, USA
December 25, 2007
Size: 3mm (1/8")
I believe this might be Echmepteryx Hageni (based on Simon and Schuster's Guide To Insects). Please confirm.

Moved
Moved from Barklice and Booklice. Phil, any luck with the fifteen or so images here

We will crack those!
We should be able to get most of those Psocoptera sorted out. I have been leaving the tricky ones for last. At the moment I am suppose to be writting a thesis but I look forward to spending some breaks digging through the books to find names for the miscellaneous winged psocoptera.

I really like what you have done with the Nymph/wingless category. It does a good job tidying up the psocoptera section

Valenzuela sp.
Yup usually I like a nice wing shot but the good focus of this little critter should allow us to place it somewhere. The honey yellow colour of the wings places it nicely in the family Caeciliusidae. This family has two genera; one has yellow/green eyes = Xanthocaecilius, the other genus Valenzuela has brown eyes. Unless you did some fancy photo shop work I would say we have a species of Valenzuela here. I can't ID them to species yet.

I call Echmepteryx hageni the 'hairy winged psocoptera'. The wings are covered with long scales (see photos in bug guide). I should take a look at Simon and Schuster and check who they have illustrated.

Sam are you digging through old photo's or did you in fact find this Christmas day. Isn't it cold and snowy down their yet? Maybe Oklahoma is more tropical then I thought.

No....
I'm not digging through old photos, the date is correct. I was out critter huntin' on this day, turning over rocks, logs, leaf litter, peeling bark, etc. But, this guy, and others, was just flying/roaming around on some boulders I was on. And, yes, we just went through one of the worst ice storms we have experienced. It broke trees, not just limbs, for miles around....pretty devastating. So, yes, we have had snow and ice. But, I think the difference is that the climate is unstable, as it usually is in Oklahoma because of our geographic location. It will be below freezing (mid to upper 20's F) for several days then it will be up into to 40's or 50's F for a few days. I'm sure it has hibernating critters thoroughly confused.

Moved
Moved from Echmepteryx hageni.

Moved back to order for now until a positive ID can be made.

Did you get a side shot?
Philip likes to see the wings and the veins.
