Mohavacris timberlakei - male

Mohavacris timberlakei - Male
Walker Pass Recreation Area, Kern County, California, USA
June 17, 2007
A rare species in higher elevation southern California deserts. These flightless grasshoppers have stick-like bodies and coloration that camouflages them remarkably well against basin big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata) and other desert plants with dark stems. This male and one other were attracted to blacklight at night in a pinyon-juniper habitat. Apparently these wingless grasshoppers occur on the ground at night. I thoroughly searched vegetation during the night and could not find others.
