Another thing...
There appears to be a spider or something stalking this beetle from behind. Those two tan appendages sticking out look like forelegs or pedipalps to me.

 
Good eyes!
I hadn't even noticed those legs coming in! I cropped the other two photos, but in one of them, the legs or whatever they are show up, but not as well as in the first one.
This beetle was in a pretty deep hole (about 4 inches, maybe more) in a scrub environment--lots of sand. Still, that was a big beetle. Any spider would have had to be large as well.

one of the dung beetles. Sorry I can't tell more from the angle of the photos.
