Some species of Temnoscheila. T. chlorodia matches this pretty well, and seems to be the most wide-spread. The tree it was found over wasn't a conifer, but I don't know what it was. The tree was also upright, though I don't know if that means anything special. I don't know my Cali trees. Thanks for any help

Temnocheila chlorodia is common in cottonwood trees (Populus) in my area. You can often find them by pulling the loose bark off of dead trees.

I believe it was in a dead cottonwood. I said I didn't know because I didn't think cottonwoods were in California. I see them all over Kansas so I thought they looked familiar!

Cottonwoods are common along the riparian corridors of California's great valley and adjacent foothills. The species is Populus fremontii.
