Gulf Coastal Plains Webspinner - Anisembia texana - male

Gulf Coastal Plains Webspinner - Anisembia texana - Male
Bryan, Brazos County, Texas, USA
December 29, 2007
Size: 10 mm
These webspinners are relatively common along the Texas gulf coast and in eastern Texas where they may be found in bark crevices or under rocks. Several specimens were found on various oak trees throughout eastern Texas (Bryan, Galveston, Giddings, and Corpus Christi areas). In August and September 2007 some immature specimens were collected in Bryan, Texas and kept in captivity. This male made its final molt in December 2007 when it was photographed. Based upon geographic location and the single segmented left cercus it is most likely Anisembia texana. There is no established common name, but the reported range for this species conveniently overlaps the physiographic regions defined as the eastern and western gulf coastal plains of Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and eastern Mexico. An immature specimen, a mature female, and an egg were also photographed and will be added to the guide.
