interesting growth
Steve, if you could post a 2nd image with this photo that is a crop of this one, zoomed in to the middle area, that would be nice. Only editors can see this image at full size. The full size shows more detail of the larvae (or whatever they are) that the ants seem to be tending to. I don't know what they are, but they are very interesting to see.
Also if you know what kind of tree this was on that may be useful to have for a possible identification.

False Honey Ants (Prenolepis imparis) - workers
This seemingly sugary wooden "ball" is somewhat of a mystery for me. Maybe a special type a plant-gall?
