encounter between scorpion and Jerusalem cricket (Stenopelmatus) - Paruroctonus silvestrii

encounter between scorpion and Jerusalem cricket (Stenopelmatus) - Paruroctonus silvestrii
Point Dume Headlands State Park, Los Angeles County, California, USA
June 16, 2006
I arrived in the middle of this encounter, which took place at night in a coastal dune habitat. The cricket was lying on its back and not moving, perhaps stung by the scorpion below. If so, the scorpion certainly captured an ample meal. The wasp in flight above the pair was photographed incidentally and its role, if any, is unknown.

Haha! great shot
I love the random wasp - it seems to have spindly legs and long antennae, so I think it's a Braconid. The wasp looks like a helicopter checking out the scene of an accident.

Scorpion is....
The scorpion appears to be a juvenile Paruroctonus silvestrii. The prey is really HUGE, more than would be expected! I'll move it to the scorpion Guides after some of you have had a look at it here. NEAT SHOT!

Nice work!
Might be good to post it to cricket section too, as underside isn't often shown.
