Eleodes 1 - Eleodes clavicornis

Eleodes 1 - Eleodes clavicornis
San Gregorio Beach, Half Moon Bay, San Mateo County, California, USA
January 9, 2008
Size: 11mm
This looks similar to one I'm going to post tomorrow, but the shape of the pronotum is different, is there any hope of species, and would underside shots help?

Size, shape of the pronotum and the shallow, scattered punctation on the pronotum, and lack of deep punctation on the face all point to Eleodes parvicollis. This is a widespread species with a number of varieties (both coastal and Sierran).

The other similar species that you would expect from this site would be E. scabrosa, but it has a heavily punctured pronotum and face. I have this species from Half Moon Bay.

Sorry Will, I forgot one other possibility that turns out to be the right one. E. clavicornis also has the shallow punctures, but has the anterior angles of the pronotum rounded and not drawn out into much of a tooth. This is clearly visible in your head shot.

I'll take some pictures of the four species in question and post them this afternoon. There are two with deep punctation and two with shallow. They can separated by the shape of the pronotum.
