Rhagio punctipennis - male

Rhagio punctipennis - Male
Occoneechee Mountain State Natural Area, Orange County, North Carolina, USA
April 21, 2005
Size: circa 8 mm
Groups of these flies, presumably males, were staked out on sunlit foliage, jockeying for position and flying up occasionally.

Identified by Paul Beuk as a (probable) Snipe Fly. Many thanks.

Hmm
I tend to go for snipe flies but I am not really happy about it. There are several genera of Nearctic snipe and ibis flies that I do not know and I do not have an immediate association with this one. In the other image you linked to, the proboscis of the female was clear enough, but this being a male does not have that advantage. On general built, wing venation and wing pattern, I would choose for snipe flies.

Thanks!
Well, I think I'll put it under Snipe Flies, then. Gosh, I've seen an illustration of this one before, I thought. I'll have to check.
